Most stump grinding in El Paso runs $75 to $300 per stump — but the spread is wide because stumps aren't priced by the hour, they're priced by what the grind actually involves. Here's what sets the number, with real El Paso ranges so you know whether a quote is fair before you book.

Key Takeaways

  • Most single residential stumps run $75–$300; large or clustered stumps go higher.
  • Diameter at grade is the biggest price factor, followed by how many stumps you have.
  • El Paso's caliche hardpan slows the grinder and can add 25–50% on some lots.
  • Grinding a stump during the same visit as the removal is usually $50–$150 cheaper than a separate trip.
  • Grind depth matters: deeper for replanting or paving, shallower for sod.

Stump grinding price ranges in El Paso

Stumps are priced mainly by diameter — measured across the widest point at ground level — plus how many you have and what's around them. These are typical El Paso ranges for a single stump:

Stump size (across at grade)Typical priceCommon examples
Small · under 12 in$75–$150Young landscape trees, single-trunk mesquites, ornamentals
Medium · 12–24 in$150–$250Established shade-tree and palm stumps, multi-trunk mesquite
Large · 24–36 in$250–$400Mature ash, mulberry, and pecan in older neighborhoods
Very large / multiple · 36 in+Quoted on siteHeritage pecans, large cottonwoods, or several in one visit

When you have several stumps in one visit, the per-stump price drops — the grinder is already on site and set up. The same ranges and the full what's-included list live on our stump grinding page.

What drives the price up or down

Stump diameter

The single biggest factor. A 30-inch pecan stump is a different machine, a different amount of time, and a lot more grinding than a 10-inch mesquite.

Caliche and rocky soil

This is the El Paso wildcard. Much of the city sits on caliche — a cemented hardpan that's brutal on grinder teeth and slows every pass. On heavy-caliche lots, expect a 25–50% bump over the base range, because what would be a 20-minute grind elsewhere turns into a slow, tooth-eating job here.

Root flare and surface roots

Wide-flaring species — mulberry, cottonwood — send out surface roots that take longer to grind than the trunk alone suggests. If you want those roots chased and ground out (not just the central stump), that adds time.

Grind depth

Standard is 6–8 inches below grade, plenty for sod. If you're replanting a tree in the same spot or pouring a slab or driveway over it, you want 10–12 inches or deeper, which costs a bit more.

Access

A stump a full-size grinder can drive right up to is cheaper than one behind a 32-inch gate that only a narrow machine fits through. Tight backyards in central El Paso are the usual culprit.

The cheapest way to grind a stump: bundle it

If you're already having a tree taken down, grinding the stump on the same visit is almost always the cheapest path — usually $50 to $150 less than booking a separate trip, because there's no second mobilization. Our tree removal quotes include the stump-grinding add-on as a line item so you can see exactly what bundling saves.

What's included — and what isn't

A standard El Paso stump grind includes:

  • Grinding the stump and visible surface roots 6–8 inches below grade
  • Backfill with the ground chips, or haul-off — your call
  • Cleanup of the work zone
  • Lawn protection where the grinder crosses turf

Common add-ons that adjust the price: a deeper grind for replanting or paving, haul-off of the chips plus topsoil backfill so the spot is ready to plant, a caliche surcharge on hardpan lots, and re-grading so the fill sits level. Every stump gets a written price before we start.
